GINGER
VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT
Ginger
is a root crop with characteristic pungent taste and pleasant aroma used in the
production of various pharmaceutical products, beverages, confectionaries and
cosmetics. There is huge demand for Nigeria Ginger in Europe, North America,
Asia, US, Canada and Saudi Arabia. This is due to fact that the quality of
fresh Ginger produce in Nigeria is the best in the world and is highly valued
for its aroma; pungency, high oil and oleoresin content. For this reason, the
Federal Government of Nigeria in 2013 graciously considered ginger as one of
the crops to be promoted along its value chain. Ginger can be grown in twenty
three states of the federation including FCT. Currently ginger is majorly
produced by ten States namely: Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Niger, Gombe, Abia,
Imo, Ebonyi, Kogi and FCT. It is worthy to note that due to the intervention of
the Federal Government, Nigeria has moved up from 6th position to
number 4th in the world Ginger production with India, China and
Nepal leading. It is an important export crop in Nigeria. The importance of
Ginger both as food and source of foreign exchange earnings is unprecedented
and as such there is need to continuously promote the development of the crop
to achieve its potentials.

VALUE CHAIN MANDATE
The
overall objective of the Ginger Transformation Agenda is to increase
production, processing and marketing of ginger crop along the value chain in
order to popularize utilization with a view to creating job opportunities, increase
farmer’s income, reduce poverty as well as improve food security.
